During its MicroStrategy World 2011 user conference in Monte Carlo, Virginia (US)-based MicroStrategy announced a number of new products and partnerships intended to strengthen the company’s position in the business intelligence (BI) space.
MicroStrategy Now in the Cloud
Perhaps the biggest announcement was the general availability of MicroStrategy Cloud. Cloud is a complete platform-as-a-service (PaaS) product for BI that will provide subscribers with on-demand access to MicroStrategy’s complete BI suite.
According to MicroStrategy chief executive officer (CEO) Michael J. Saylor:
MicroStrategy Cloud will transform the way [the company’s] customers build and deploy solutions and strategic information applications. MicroStrategy is building and deploying this infrastructure so that each customer can avoid investing millions of dollars on their own hardware and human resources.
To ensure that its new cloud-based offering provides the full spectrum of BI functionality—from Data Integration to Analytics and Data Visualization—MicroStrategy also signed important partnerships with ParAccel, IBM Netezza, and Informatica.
MicroStrategy and Informatica
Under the terms of a new strategic alliance, MicroStrategy will include Informatica’s Data Integration services as a core component of MicroStrategy Cloud. MicroStrategy customers will be able to use their own Informatica PowerCenter environment or PowerExchange for enterprise customers that require high-volume data integration services.
Sohaib Abbasi, Informatica’s chairman and CEO had this to say:
Building on our decade-long relationship [with Microstrategy], our joint customers will now gain even more from the combination of the award-winning Informatica Cloud data integration service and the leading MicroStrategy business intelligence platform.
MicroStrategy and ParAccel
Another core component of MicroStrategy Cloud will be ParAccel’s high-performance analytical technology. Both companies signed a partnership agreement that will enable MicroStrategy to use the ParAccel analytical platform as part of MicroStrategy’s social applications and as an option for MicroStrategy’s Cloud customers.
According to Sanju Bansal, COO of MicroStrategy:
MicroStrategy Cloud will combine the power and flexibility of ParAccel’s analytical engine with MicroStrategy’s industry-leading business intelligence, enabling organizations to deliver large scale applications faster and more cost effectively than ever before.
Chuck Berger, chairman and CEO of ParAccel, added:
MicroStrategy is an ideal partner for ParAccel as both of our companies are focused on providing best-of-breed analytic solutions to organizations where information analysis is understood to be a significant competitive advantage.
With these new partnerships, MicroStrategy can offer users cloud-based BI in configurations ranging from SaaS to PaaS. A full-featured BI suite that includes data analysis and visualization features, strong data integration features for large volumes of information, and the ability to analyze data extremely quickly using state of the art applications and appliances may well prompt several organizations to finally migrate their BI processes to the cloud.
This is part of a larger trend among BI vendors to expand the range of functions and features offered in the cloud to include aspects of the BI data cycle. Microstrategy will probably not be the last vendor to realize that expansion via strategic partnerships. It will be interesting to watch the BI space in the coming months.
