IBM has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Vivisimo, a provider of federated data discovery and navigation solutions. This acquisition will enable IBM to reinforce its offering in the enterprise search and data discovery spaces.
Just as Oracle has Endeca, now Big Blue will count on Vivisimo to perform advanced enterprise search and data discovery tasks as part of its business analytics portfolio. Both functionalities are gaining significance in the business analytics arena owing to the importance of analyzing both structured and nonstructured data, especially when it comes from big data sources.
Regarding the recent acquisition, Arvind Krishna, general manager of information management within IBM Software Group, says:
Navigating big data to uncover the right information is a key challenge for all industry. The winners in the era of big data will be those who unlock their information assets to drive innovation, make real-time decisions, and gain actionable insights to be more competitive.
On the flip side, John Kealey, CEO of Vivisimo, recognizes that:
As part of IBM, we can bring clients the quickest and most accurate access to information necessary to drive growth initiatives that increase customer satisfaction, streamline processes, and boost sales.
This is one of several moves IBM is making to round out its big data and analysis strategy, which mainly focuses on working with Apache Hadoop. With the acquisition of Vivisimo, IBM’s big data analysis umbrella will have more complete coverage.
