Dassault Systèmes, a global provider of 3D design software, 3D digital mock-up (DMU), and product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions, announced during its recent annual North American forum (the former Dassault Systèmes Customer Conference has been renamed the 3DEXPERIENCE Forum) the launch of a new industry solution experience for aerospace and defense (A&D) companies called “Winning Program.” A&D companies will be able to configure the right concept for their customers and know from the earliest stages that they can deliver it on budget and on time. As Dassault Systèmes Customer Conference (DSCC) 2010 moved to day 2, use of the word “innovation” continued its popularity at various sessions. However, I’d like to refrain from using this hot keyword and move to “sustainability,” one of the outcomes of innovation, and discuss it from a role perspective.

This thought was triggered by today’s ENOVIA Brand Overview session by Michel Tellier, Chief Executive Officer, ENOVIA, Dassault Systèmes. During this session, ENOVIA V6 offerings were presented from a roles perspective by discussing what the solution was capable of for each of the following four roles: program manager, engineering manager, mid-market manager, and supply chain sourcing manager. Of course, there are more roles for PLM solutions, but these selected roles together provide a quick but quite representative look of what ENOVIA is about. The Dassault Systèmes Customer Conference (DSCC) 2010 kicked off on November 9th, 2010 in Orlando, Florida. It is the second time that Dassault Systèmes has hosted the customer conference collectively for most of the company’s brands at a single event, with a geographic focus on the Americas (the European Customer Forum [ECF] 2010 is the European equivalence taking place in two weeks).

When I had a little time to reflect after the busy first day came to an end, the key word that popped into my mind was “innovation,” the most frequently used keyword today, and which appeared in multiple sessions in conjunction with different adjectives. Read the rest of this entry »

There wasn’t a lack of big news in the product lifecycle management (PLM) industry in the past few weeks. On May 20^th, Siemens PLM Software unveiled High Definition Product Lifecycle Management (HD-PLM) at the World Exposition Shanghai China 2010 (Expo 2010). On June 7^th, PTC told PTC/USER 2010 attendees that a virtual launch event for Project Lightning was schedule on October 28^th, 2010. Two days later, Dassault Systèmes announced the acquisition of Exalead (read the press release). Since the month of June is packed with three major PLM events in the world (PTC/USER World Event, Dassault Systèmes SwYm Conference, and Siemens PLM Connection) in a row, it is no surprise to have some big PLM news  for the sake of marketing. Part 1 of this blog post series discussed in general the relationship between product lifecycle management (PLM) and lean product development (LPD), and pointed out that various PLM vendors may have different interpretations of PLM functionality, as well as different levels of support for users’ LPD initiatives. A few months ago while I was listening to Dassault Systèmes (DS) executives explaining the company’s sales and marketing strategies and achievements, I wondered what the next move might be since I found the relationship between DS and IBM was becoming more delicate than before. My concern was that a very sophisticated approach would be required in order to grow DS’s own sales capability, while keeping the strong and long-time DS/IBM partnership in good shape.
